“Pan Am”: What Moniqueblog will do during the small hiatus

With Pan Am going on a three week break (now two weeks, since the AMAs have already aired), I thought I’d provide a bit of a rundown as to what I’m going to write about until the show comes back.

The State of Pan Am: Similar to how I broke down the pros and cons of Outsourced (which I’m planning to get back to at the start of the year), I will break down the pros and cons of Pan Am. If you’re a regular reader of the recaps, you probably have a good idea as to what I’m going to write about, but hopefully, I’ll have something new there, too.

Pan Am Interviews: I’m currently working on getting some interviews from some of the cast of the show, so once those are completed, I’ll have those on the site. I don’t know if I’ll have them up before Pan Am comes back on, but they’re coming, for sure.

Pan Am Hair: I think its fair to say that the hairstyles on Pan Am have made for some of the more contentious battles on the internet, what with people who grew up in the 1960s saying that the hairstyling, especially the men’s hairstyling, is all wrong. I didn’t grow up in the ’60s, but I’ll do my best to uncover the truth.

Sanjeev: The POC of Pan Am: Sanjeev is interesting to me because he’s a person of color who works for an institution that still had a bias against other people of color, i.e. black people. I’m going to write at least one post (we’ll see if I have enough fodder for a series of posts) about if it was common to see someone like Sanjeev working for Pan Am pre-Affirmative Action. By extention, I’ll probably write a bit about Pan Am’s Nisei Program, which was created to help end the discrimination against Japanese-Americans.

So that’s what’s coming up. Stay tuned!

FALL TV: “Prime Suspect” is actually really good

I’ll be the first to say that I thought the U.S. version of Prime Suspect was going to suck. hard. The trailers and commercials were horrendous. With Maria Bello’s cop character Jane Timoney acting all bada** and stuff out of context, along with the ridiculous hats and scarves (see: above), makes her look like one of those dramatic female characters who are all about “I am woman! I am Tough, Agressive, and I wear HATS because I’m tougher than ANY MAN!” and that turned me off completely.

However, I have to admit, happily even, that I was completely wrong about Prime Suspect. It stands up to the original British version and passes the “success” test with flying colors.

Not much was changed about the original synopsis (if you know the original version, I don’t need to tell you what’s going on): Timoney, a cop who wants to move up in her job and become the lead detective, finally gets her chance when the unforeseen happens to one of her colleagues (this scene could be a mental trigger for some, so be cautious when viewing). Dealing with the “Boy’s Club” attitude of the precinct, she begrudgingly gains their respect while leading them toward the culprit of a string of rape/murders.

The show has been nicely adapted to U.S. soil and brings the same level of heart and gruesome realism the original had (good time to point here: if you have a keen sensitivity to seeing such violence, there’s one scene you might not want to watch). I have to agree with the critics when they say that Bello is amazing in this roll. She is, gladly, not one of those “Strong Woman” stereotypes. She is doesn’t announce she is a woman like so many of those “Strong Woman” types do. Instead, she acts like a person without labels–she’s just a person who wants to succeed at her job and will go to any lengths to get the job done. She’s a feminist without trying hard nor putting others down, and that’s refreshing. In fact, I wish there were more female characters in cop shows that took this approach.

I’ll tune in to see this series progress. I’m glad to be wrong about this show. However, I still think she is completely over-styled–is she supposed to be a quirky-verging-on-bad dresser? Can she at least not wear the hat?
