All-white shortlist for “Akira”: time to discuss

I don’t have much time to analyze this story in depth just yet, but the latest movie news is concerning the new shortlist for the film adaptation of the seminal manga/anime, “Akira”. And, just like with “The Last Airbender”, there’s a discrepancy with casting.

The shortlist for the movie includes names like Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Justin Timberlake, Joaquin Phoenix, and Chris Pine.

My gut answer is: what does an Asian/Asian-American actor who’s not Jackie Chan or Jet Li have to do to be considered for a role in Hollywood? What is this? Why does this stuff keep happening!?

Well, I’ve already sent out emails to MANAA (Media Action Network for Asian Americans) and racebending.com (who have already started petitions and protests) about the matter and their opinions. Keep watching Moniqueblog for more analysis on this development.
