Vintage Review: “The Power” (1968)

The Power is a science-fiction movie that stars George Hamilton as Professor Jim Tanner, a committee member on a special government board developed to study the effects of pain and stress on astronauts. One of their committee members, Professor Henry Hallson (Arthur O’Connell) finds out that one of the committee members is a Superman capable of mental powers and is killed. It is now up to Tanner to figure out which of the committee members is behind the murder and stop them before anyone else (along with himself) is killed.

The movie itself is high-grade B material, but the suspense is cleverly built up. But the end is a bit odd; even though it’s explained, it seemed like it came too suddenly. However, like I said, it’s a movie of B material. Whatever you think of the ending, though, the film is a classic example of ’60s drive-in science fiction and is a great diversion. If you’re a fan of ’60s science fiction, you might like this movie. The Power is available online at the Warner Archive.
