The inaugural post of the Box Office Battle! My intent with this new section is to have a post at the end of the week about how the latest movies have played out at the theaters. That way, you can get your movie reviews and box office stats in one cool post!
Vampires Suck
Vampires Suck is one of those parody movies by the “comedy” duo Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. The consensus overall is that this movie, just like the vampires they’re making fun of, sucks hardcore. On Rotten Tomates, the film is at a scorchingly awful 5%. A taste of the all-out war critics are having with this movie:
“Below bottom of the barrel”–Time Out New York
“This movie is an exercise in lowest common denominator humor, in which the reference is king.”–Combustible Celluloid
“[F]ails to find anything remotely winning with its hunt and peck sense of humor”–AMC FilmCritic
To further prove the point, here’s the Spill podcast review:
However, the film came in at #2, making $12, 202, 831, much to the chagrin of everyone who hates these type of referential movies.
Next is Nanny McPhee Returns, which is at 77% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Overall, everyone is saying the movie is great for family entertainment, even though some of the humor might be a bit more juvenile than the first film.
“Thompson’s brilliance can be seen all through this mostly kid-friendly tale.”–Denton Record Chronicle
“That those blemishes begin to disappear each time her kids learn from her teachings offers a somewhat disturbing statement on the value of physical beauty.”–Detroit News
“Nanny McPhee shows up, she says, when she is needed but not wanted. As soon as she is wanted but not needed, she must go. So what does she do when you don’t care one way or the other?”–Times-Picayune
The film is in 8th place, tracking in at $8, 407, 685. Meanwhile, The Switch is also not doing so well right now at the box office, even though it surprised some fatigued rom-com audiences and critics alike with great dialogue and acting. However, the script leans close to some of those rom-com tendencies that makes people cringe. It is at 49% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes.
“The Switch is a labored comedy about a woman who hears her biological clock ticking and decides to have a baby through artificial insemination.”–KPBS.org
“[S]uffused with a piquant sense of melancholia . . . it makes its points with sly precision and a wicked sense of humor”–Killer Movie Reviews
“A real switch would have been to draw some real characters and let them dictate the story instead of plugging good actors into a tired formula.”–Scene-Stealers.com
Overall, however, the top five movies of the week are:
1. The Expendables–$16, 968,032
2. Vampires Suck–$12, 202, 831
3. Eat Pray Love–$12, 111, 162
4. Lottery Ticket–$10, 652, 297
5. The Other Guys–$10, 163, 337
