Animated Race: 11 Native-American animated characters

A few years ago, I learned that I was 1/4 Cherokee, although it was just this year that I even thought to learn more about that side of my heritage. As with most things in my life, I went to comics and cartoons for some sort of understanding. But as I thought about it, I wasn’t sure how many animated Native American characters were in existence since I only knew about a few. Thus, this list (as well as this new segment, Animated Race) was born. Today, we’ll list ten Native American animated characters, whether they are well-known or small-scale. Some characters are controversial, others were made to break down barriers, but all of them do some role in showing Native American faces on the small screen.

Apache Chief/Longshadow (The Justice League/Justice League: Unlimited)

John Redcorn (King of the Hill)

Pocahontas and tribe (Disney's Pocahontas) (Powhatan)

Marshall BraveStarr (BraveStarr)

Turok (Turok, Son of Stone)

Danielle Moonstar/Mirage (X-Men Evolution) (Cheyenne)

Dawnstar (Legion of Superheroes--no animated picture found) (Anasazi)

Princess TigerLily (Disney's Peter Pan)

Elisa Maza (Disney's Gargoyles) (1/2 Hopi or Zuni Native American, 1/2 African-American-Nigerian descent)

Silver Fox (X-Men Animated Series) (Canadian Blackfoot)

Brock Samson (The Venture Brothers) (1/4 Winnebago)

What are some of your favorite Native-American animate characters?
