Robot Chicken‘s Tom Root wrote Jughead’s milestone 200th issue, happily injecting it with a crazy shot of adrenaline.
The storyline involves Jughead walking into a mysterious diner with a witch for a waitress who, after selling Jughead the sandwich of his dreams, asks for something important in return-his metabolism. Thus, a chain of events sets off, leading to Jughead asking to help from Riverdale’s other resident witch, Sabrina.
A lot of good things happened in this issue. Not only is the writing inventive and entertaining, but the drawing seems more top-notch, and I was especially impressed by the clothing the characters wore; in short, everything seemed like it could be happening this year instead of years past. Actually, if I’m being honest, Archie Comics has been doing a lot to freshen up their brand, including introducing an openly gay character to their line-up.
Also, getting Tom Root to write a story for Archie Comics also brings the issue into the now. To have a Robot Chicken writer involved in Archie Comics is something to give the tip of my hat to. Root gives the characters’ dialogue bite and wit, something that was prevalent in the Archie comics of old. It’s still present to a degree today, but not to the degree that it is in Jughead #200. Hopefully this trend of snappy writing continues and grows stronger. Also, this is the first Archie Comics book to have a variant cover (see above).Overall, this is a must-buy for Archie collectors and enthusiasts.
