Recently, the news broke that beloved Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy would be retiring from acting (and possibly sci-fi convention stints) after his character’s arc on Fringe as Dr. William Bell. The worst part of the news is that there will be no more of his donning the ears as Mr. Spock. Ever, not even in the next Star Trek film. Nimoy said that one reason he’s retiring is because he doesn’t want to steal the spotlight from his successor, Zachary Quinto. Nimoy told the Toronto Sun, “I want to get off the stage. Also, I don’t think it would be fair to Zachary Quinto. He’s a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it’s time to give him some space. And I’m very flattered the character will continue.”
Even though Star Trek and sci-fi fans will be sad about this news (I know I am), let’s be like Nimoy and be happy that Spock will continue through the fantastic acting of Quinto. As sad as I am to know that Nimoy won’t be on the small or big screens anymore, I am more than pumped to see Quinto as Spock again. I think Quinto is now the only other person I trust with the heavy burden of being Spock.
