There were quite a few upsets at this year’s Golden Globes, and by “quite a few”, I mean basically meaning three really big ones. First, how could Sandra Bullock-who I’m actually a fan of-win Best Actress for her role in The Blind Side over Gabourey Sidibe for her role in Precious? How is that possible? Sidibe had to go to much, much darker places than Bullock did in order to make Precious the girl believable and Precious the movie that much more of a success. Secondly, how could James Cameron win Best Director for Avatar when, again, Precious  and The Hurt Locker as clearly superior movies in terms of storyline. I know a lot of Avatar fans might kill me for saying things like this, but Lee Daniels and Kathryn Bigelow should’ve been given some credit for what they brought to the screen. At least Bigelow was nominated–they didn’t even acknowledge Daniels. By the same token, Precious should’ve gotten Best Picture, because the only think Avatar really excels in are graphics. I’m not trying to sound like an uber-Precious fan or anything, but I think the night should’ve gone the opposite from what it did.

Good things, however, did, in fact, happen. Like freshman show Glee winning Best Television Series-Comedy or Musical, Michael Giacchino winning Best Original Score for Up, and the WTF-moment of the night–Kevin Bacon winning a Globe!? He won for his performance in Taking Chance, and I think that now that he’s won his first Globe, thus gaining better Hollywood recognition and clout, he’ll be popping up in a ton more movies this year and beyond.

The cool/uncomfortable parts of the night were host Ricky Gervais making jokes about NBC, Paul McCartney’s divorce to McCartney’s face, and plugging everything he starred and will star in. Like Gervais himself said, however, I’m sure they won’t be inviting him back. Also, The Good Wife’s Julianna Margulies  (who also won a Best Actress Globe for said TV show), took a stab at NBC, saying that she was glad to be on a network who believed in television drama at 10 p.m. Whether it was ill-placed or not will be left up to you.

What did you think of the Golden Globes?
