Now that we know who’s who and what’s what, let’s figure out where we are in this world of Avatar. After all, we need to know which direction to go when we vanquish the Fire Lord, right? Let’s take a closer look at some of the most prominent places associated with the four nations.

WATER

Overall, the Water Tribe is least powerful nation; because of this, many of the Southern and Northern tribes have been killed by the overpowering Fire Nation. The Water Tribe are centered around the North and South Poles. Originally, the Water Tribe were centered only in the North Pole, but a dispute caused a group of benders, healers, and warriors to found a new colony at the South Pole.

Northern Water Tribe-The sister of the Southern Water Tribe is contained within one city at the North Pole. Originally built as a place to unite all the numerous Northern Tribes, it is the only surviving city of the Water Tribe, and due to the high ice walls and difficult terrain, no Fire siege during The War has ever succeeded. Princess Yue is part of the royal family of the Northern Water Tribe.

NORTHERN WATER TRIBE

Southern Water Tribe-Katara and Sokka’s home, the Southern Water Tribe, is located in the South Pole. While the Northern Water Tribe is safe from Fire Nation attacks, the Southern Tribe, which used to be a gorgeous city like its northern sister, is close to extinction.

FIRE

FIRE NATION

The Fire Nation is the second largest nation in area and population; the largest is the Earth Kingdom. While the Fire Nation isn’t the strongest in terms of area, they are the monetary leader of the four nations due to their industry and technologically based economy. The Fire Nation is surrounded by volcanic islands, giving the nation a humid climate fit for their population of firebenders. Prince Zuko, Commander Zhao, and Iroh come from the Fire Nation.

EARTH

Being the largest nation, the Earth Kingdom can be thought of as the Avatar universe’s version of Eurasia. The Earth Kingdom is ethically diverse (which can be seen in the nobles at Ba Sing Se and Suki and her warriors at Kyoshi Island), and economically strong; due to these traits, it is the largest threat to the Fire Nation aside from the Avatar. The capital of the Earth Kingdom is Ba Sing Se.

AIR SANCTUARY

The Air Temples are located in the north, south, east, and west. These temples are where Air Nomads train, and the large sanctuaries housed in the temples are believed to keep the knowledge of the Avatar and the Avatar’s previous incarnations. The Southern Air Temple is where Aang trained.
